Arad

Intro

Arad is a city situated on the right bank of the Mureş river. It is a modern city, containing many beautiful buildings. The city is also the seat of the Romanian orthodox bishop. According to the last census, more than 180000 people call Arad "home".

The proximity to the western border of the country played a large role in making Arad one of the most prosperous cities in Romania.

Location

The city is situated in Arad county in western Romania, a couple of tens of kilometres east of Romania's border with Hungary.

Getting to

Arad has an international airport, 4km away from the civic center, that links the city with major European destination, especially in Germany and southern Europe.

You can also reach Arad quite quick if you're coming from Hungary, as the city isn't too far from the border.

Attractions

One main attraction in Arad is the fortified town built in the Vauban, star-shaped style in the second half of the 18th century.

As you'll see below, Arad is big on palaces, buildings and all sorts of monuments:

  • Administrative palace - built in the second half of the 19th century;
  • Neuman palace, Cenad palace, Judiciary palace, Szantay palace, Bohuş palace, Cultural palace;
  • The house with cannon balls - built in 1800. Seventeen cannon balls are implemented in its walls;
  • The old theathre - built in 1817; oldest stone theathre in Romania;
  • The statue of St. John of Nepomuk - 1729, baroque;
  • The Holy Trinity monument - 1746;
  • Reconciliation Park;
  • "St. Peter and Paul" Serbian church - built around 1700, early Baroque style;
  • "St. Simon" monastery - 1762; Baroque as well;
  • "Birth of Saint John the Baptist" cathedral (Orthodox) - Baroque architecture;
  • "St. Anthony of Padua" cathedral (Catholic) - Rennaissance style.

Sports

Arad is home to the most titled football (soccer) team in Romania, outside Bucharest, UT Arad. UTA was founded in 1946 and won 6 Romanian titles as well as the Romanian cup twice. Their kit colours are red and white and one of the most famous player originating from UTA was Helmuth Duckadam, saver of 4 penalties for Steaua Bucharest in the Champions Cup final against Barcelona in Sevilla in May 1986.
